Grid Connected Small-Scale Photovoltaic Systems (PVs)

Background

The objective of the project is to remove the barriers to increased power generation by small, decentralized, grid-connected PV systems implemented by households and small- and medium-size enterprises.

The project will catalyze the development of decentralized, grid‐connected small‐scale renewable energy (RE) power generation market in Egypt and the solar PV in particular. The target is to facilitate the installation of at least 4 MWp of new decentralized private PV capacity during the lifetime of the project, resulting in direct GHG reduction benefits of 66 kilotons of CO2eq. Complementary indirect mitigation benefits are expected from the sustained market growth of the PV market after the project with estimated GHG reduction of about 0.6‐0.7 million tons of CO2eq.

Accomplishments

  • The project has supported 37 projects from different sectors including: Industrial, Commercial, Tourism, Educational Services, Public and Residential Sector through providing technical support for 21 projects and financial and technical support for 16 projects.
  • The project has installed 60 solar plants with a total installed capacity of 2.2 MW which has resulted in a total energy savings of 3491 MWh/y and estimated 2039 Tons/y  of Co₂ reduction.
  • A framework for financial support of PV Systems was developed by the project depending on the sector, impact (whether social or economic) and attractiveness.
  • The project has developed a tool to calculate the revenues of the PV system, financial feasibility and show the cash flows during the lifetime of the implemented project.
  • The project has conducted a study to analyze the market barriers, determine financial and technical support schemes to catalyze the small-scale PV market and provide policy recommendations to enable further integration of small scale grid connected PV markets.
  •  The project launched a simple live calculator for users to help them figure out the capacity of the PV system they need, payback period, and the required area for installation.
  • The project has published a recommended list of Solar Systems Integrators online in order to ensure the highest standards of quality in terms of design, installation, operation and maintenance.
  • The project organized training sessions in the Engineers Syndicate of the New Valley for 109 Engineers and organized capacity building sessions to give an introductory brief on solar energy for the financial institutions and tourism sector.
