December 24, 2019

The Opening Panel in the presence of UNDP Resident Representative Randa Aboul-Hosn (Right) and Dr. Ahmed Kamali, Deputy Minister of Planning, Monitoring and Administrative Reform at the Conference. UNDP Egypt/Noran Ibrahim

Delivered by UNDP Resident Representative Randa Aboul-Hosn

Excellencies, distinguished guests, dear colleagues, ladies and gentlemen,

On behalf of UNDP, it is my pleasure to welcome you to this important workshop on monitoring the implementation of SDGs in Egypt.

1.   SDGs are hard goals to achieve, because the issues they tackle are complex and entrenched.

2.   “We do not achieve what we don’t measure, what we cannot track”

Therefore, measuring progress towards SDGs is critical to their successful implementation.
In the continuity of the joint cooperation between the Egyptian government and UN to support monitoring of the indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals, and based on the Egypt’s Voluntary National Reviews (2016 and 2018) the main challenges are the availability, accessibility and quality of data, therefore, suggested by the UN M&E group and endorsed by the Ministry of Planning, Monitoring and Administrative Reform, to implement a series of workshops  to prepare a national road map - in a participatory manner - to efficiently and effectively monitor the indicators of the SDGs. We are hoping to reach the largest possible coverage of (Tier I) SDGs indicators (moving from 37% availability of data to 90%) in the next VNR 2021 report in a disaggregated and replicable manner.

In this regard, this workshop provides an excellent opportunity for this by bringing together representatives from the Government of Egypt, CAPMAS, National institutions, the UN agencies and M&E specialists.

This workshop is a step in the right direction, as it aims to present the current data gaps and define the required needs, roles and responsibilities of all key partners involved, and propose concrete and detailed ways forward to make the missing data available. This will help accelerate implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Egypt. It will also reinforce the Monitoring framework for Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy

We hope that the workshop will provide a fruitful platform for identifying and addressing collectively the challenges to measure and therefore to track and manage the implementation of SDGs in Egypt.

The task at hand is large. Let me wish us success in your intense work.

Thank you.
