UNDP aims to assist Egypt in mitigating the risks of climate change as well as mainstream environmental concerns in all areas of policy. We support a number of national projects with a diverse set of goals, including limiting pollution and the emission of Greenhouse Gases, preserving fragile and vulnerable eco-systems, decreasing energy waste and improving consumption patterns.
For climate change, we also support the government to prepare national climate change reports as part of its commitments towards the climate change convention. UNDP assisted the Egyptian government in developing its national climate change adaptation plans meeting its international role by submitting national as well as reporting to UNFCCC secretariat on the climate change initiatives through the national communication reports.
UNDP supports the government of Egypt in the adaptation of low lying lands in the Nile Delta with the expected sea level rise associated with climate change through Integrated Coastal Zone Management planning and implementation of soft engineering solutions for shore protection.
UNDP also supports the Government in decreasing energy waste and energy consumption by helping with the spread of energy efficient lighting systems. This is significant as 25% of energy consumption in Egypt goes to lighting. The project targets the public and private sectors, and aims to increase families’ awareness, as the residential sector consumes 40% of the electricity in Egypt. Implementing energy efficient lighting systems will help Egypt’s energy security and reduce its overall energy demands. We initiated with the government market transformation to energy efficient lighting systems from different sectors in Egypt. The project implemented more than 15 energy efficiency lighting pilot projects in various types of buildings through providing technical assistance and co-financing.
UNDP has also collaborated with the Ministry of Environment, and the Global Environment Facility to curb greenhouse gas emission and energy consumption in the transport sector by launching the “Sustainable Transport for Egypt” project which built two 14km Non-motorized vehicles roads in Fayoum and Shebin El-
UNDP has helped Egypt make progress in Solid Waste Management in the governorates as well, with the introduction of more advanced technology for composting in landfills in Minya, establishing a waste composting plant, transfer stations, and a sanitary landfill. In order to ensure the economic sustainability of the even part of its reject waste is sold to companies such as CEMEX. This project was supported by UNDP and funded by the
Over the past several years, UNDP has successfully capitalized in its network of public figures, volunteers, civil society organizations and government and inter-governmental organizations to help Egypt pursue its environmental goals and ensure they are provided with the technical support and knowledge that is required.
Adaptation and mitigation
Our programmes address both climate change adaptation and mitigation. In this respect, UNDP Egypt is supporting government efforts in climate change adaptation of low lying lands in the Nile Delta to rising sea levels and reducing weather related disasters.
We also support government initiatives to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy as well as low emission development techniques and strategies. UNDP together with the government initiated the market transformation to energy efficient lighting systems covering the public and private sectors. Thus far more than 15 tyes of buildings and facilities have been converted to energy efficiency lighting through UNDP’s technical assistance and co-financing.
UNDP also supports the government to prepare national climate change reports as part of its commitments towards the climate change convention. UNDP assisted the Egyptian government in developing its national climate change adaptation plans meeting its international role by submitting national as well as reporting to UNFCCC secretariat on the climate change initiatives through the national communication reports. We contribute to Goal 13 on climate change in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
