Applying an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management: focus on seamounts of the southern Indian ocean

November 27, 2015

In 2009, UNDP-GEF and IUCN began collaborating on a pilot International Waters project designed to promote an ecosystem approach to management of seamounts in Marine Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ).

The project created a vital environmental status baseline from which to monitor future trends and impacts by conducting some of the first scientific assessments of these ecosystems.

In parallel, an analysis of anthropogenic threats to seamount ecosystems was undertaken highlighting the cumulative effects from the complete range of human activities in these areas.

The project conducted a legal and institutional gap analysis and proposed options for improvement of the governance framework.

Finally, a road map process was proposed towards sustainable use and conservation of marine biodiversity via the development of an adaptive and collaborative management plan.

Highlights

  • The project created an environmental status baseline from which to monitor future trends
  • An analysis of anthropogenic threats to seamount ecosystems was undertaken
  • The project conducted a legal and institutional gap analysis
  • An adaptive and collaborative management plan was mapped out
  • The project raised awareness about deep sea biodiversity and the need to protect the high seas
