UN Staff Donate Blood, Save Lives

01 Jun 2012

“Our over 1,000 national and international UN staff based in Cairo are honoured to be serving the people of Egypt. Today’s event is an expression of appreciation from the UN family in Egypt towards the people of Egypt. It is also a salute to the many silent heroes who regularly donate blood to help save lives,” UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt James Rawley, said at a blood donation campaign at the UN premises, under the theme of “Every blood donor is a hero”.

The campaign was co-organized by the UN Volunteers (UNV) in cooperation with Takatof Foundation and the National Blood Transfusion Services. The collected blood was delivered for free to emergency rooms, medical insurance, public hospitals, National Cancer Institute; and at low cost to individuals in private hospitals, to over-come the permanent shortage of blood at national blood banks, which only fulfills a third of national blood needs.

The campaign was initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and extended to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) (both Country and Regional offices), Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the UN Fund for Population (UNFPA). It was met with high enthusiasm and participation from the staff of all these agencies.

The campaign comes within the UN celebration of the World Blood Donor Day. This year’s theme of “Every blood donor is a hero” focuses on the idea that every one of us can become a hero by giving blood. It recognizes the silent and unsung heroes who save lives every day through giving blood voluntarily and regularly.
