UN Signs Three Action Plans with Egypt

The United Nations and the Government of Egypt signed three Country’s Programme Action Plans (CPAPs)  with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) and the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA). The CPAPs outline activities and programmes of UN support to Egypt in implementing its development agenda over the period 2013 to 2017.

The CPAPs were signed by H.E. Dr. Ahmed Amr Derag Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, with UNICEF’s Representative Mr. Philippe Duamelle, UNDP’s Country Director Mr. Ignacio Artaza, and UNFPA’s Representative Mr. Jaime Nadal.

The Chair of the UN Regional Development Group and UNDP Assistant Administrator & Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States Dr. Sima Bahous and UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt Ms. Anita Nirody attended the signing event.

The CPAP for the World Food Programme (WFP) was signed on 18 June, by H.E. Dr. Ahmed El Gizawy Minister of Agriculture and WFP Representative Mr. Gianpietro Bordignon.

The CPAPs further the mutual agreement and cooperation between the UN and Egypt in the realization of the Millennium Development Goals and in helping Egypt in fulfilling its obligations to the various conventions, treaties and protocols to which it is signatory. It also paves the way for assisting in the consultations and implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda which focuses on fighting poverty, good governance, gender equality, climate change and the promotion of sustainable development goals. 

The UN in Egypt is composed of 33 agencies, funds and programmes which actively support Egypt’s sustainable development and transition to greater democracy. The UN supports human rights, justice, equity and prosperity within a sustainable and clean environment with a special emphasis on women and youth.
