UNDP & Microsoft Egypt partners in the first Freelancing Summit in EgyptJun 28, 2015
On 28 June 2015, Microsoft Egypt and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held the first freelancing summit in Egypt; “FreelanceME Summit’15". This summit acts as a cornerstone to the UNDP-Microsoft initiative entitled FreelanceME.
FreelanceME is a social development initiative and online platform launched in February 2015. It aims to develop Egyptian youth skills and experience, create new freelancing opportunities, foster small and medium enterprises, and connect freelancers with employers on a national scale through a free of charge online platform.
“In Egypt, where we have 62% of the population under the age of 29, youth present a tremendous potential and we believe they hold the key to their own empowerment. This is why we are delighted to be part of the innovative solution FreelanceME that addresses unemployment, a key barrier to youth empowerment. This online platform is a gateway that connects proactive youth to thousands of available opportunities and employers”, said Ignacio Artaza, UNDP Country Director.
“FreelanceME summit is the first of its kind and a step forward to empower youth and qualify them in areas such as marketing, management and sales. This initiative provides them with communications skills to deal with clients and achieve their goals in different businesses”, said Ghada Khalifa, Microsoft Citizenship Programme Lead in Egypt.
The summit brought together 180 youth and the freelancers’ community in a day of knowledge sharing, networking and education. It was deliberated to raise the awareness of Egyptian youth on the benefits of freelancing, inspire and empower them to develop their knowledge skills and provide guidance on how to start working as freelancers. Participants were also audience to a motivational session and a panel discussion that featured 5 inspirational freelancers who shared with youth their stories, challenges, failures and successes both nationally and regionally.
