General Organization for Physical Planning & UNDP sign “Participatory Strategic Urban Planning for Alexandria City Till 2032” in presence of Minsters of International Cooperation and HousingDec 26, 2016
The General Organization for Physical Planning (GOPP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed today the project extension document of “Participatory Strategic Urban Planning for Alexandria City Till 2032”. The document was signed by Dr. Assem El-Gazzar, GOPP Chairman, H.E. Ambassador Saïd Hindam, Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation for Development, and Ms. Naglaa Arafa, Country Director a.i. in presence of Dr. Sahr Nasr, Minister of International Cooperation and Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities.
The project aims to develop a Strategic Urban Plan (SUP) for Alexandria City to provide the road map that will guide development in the city till year 2032 in addition to the preparation of a methodology to develop urban management and skills which will highly contribute to developing the strategic plans.
Dr. Sahr Nasr announced that the project is extended for two years to train the regional center and local authority staff and prepare the strategic plans. Dr. Nasr also pointed to the United Nations' partnership with Egypt to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is also linked to the Ministry of Housing in areas such as linking areas with drinking water. In addition, UNDP is considered one of the supporters of the government's economic and social programme to attain inclusive development, help the poorest and provide jobs to youth and women in particular.
Dr. Madbouli mentioned that the project is in partnership with UNDP which provides the technical support. The project sets the vision for Alexandria in the next 15 years to absorb the growing population of Alexandria, enable its connection to Borg Al Arab, and develop the governorate's slums areas. He also confirmed that the outcome of the project is then directly implemented using the state or international organizations’ funds.
From his side, Dr. Essam El Gazzar clarified that the GOPP is the responsible institution to develop the urban strategic plan through its regional center in Alexandria, in partnership with development partners especially the governorate's local units. He also stated that the project (2010-2015) has succeeded in preparing a monitoring mechanism through its partnership with experts, academia and faculty of engineering professors at Alexandria university. In addition, the project developed a set of reports on city development profile, used participatory approach to produce the strategic plan and created a list of potential projects based on the governorate’s priorities and plans. It also prepared strategic plans for priority areas such as the area behind Carrefour and the airport lake.
Ms. Naglaa Arafa also added that “we are happy to partner with the Ministry of Housing and GOPP in this project, which is aligned with Egypt’s strategic priorities and Vision 2030 that relates to urban development. It aims to build Egypt that can recognise its abilities and resources to meet people’s aspirations and guarantee their wellbeing by 2030. Furthermore, the project is aligned with the SDGs; Goal 11 in particular on Sustainable Cities which aims to build capacities in the field of planning and management of cities".Contact information
