Ministry of Youth and Sports, UNV, UNDP, and Microsoft Egypt celebrate International Volunteer Day 2016

The Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports in partnership with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Microsoft Egypt celebrated the International Volunteer Day on December 5th, 2016 at the Olympic Center in Cairo. The celebration focused on 3 pillars including quality of education and innovation, gender equality and employment for economic growth.

IVD 2016's theme #GlobalApplause - give volunteers a hand, recognizes volunteers worldwide and all they do in making peace and sustainable development a reality.

The celebration encompassed a number of stations covering career guiding, CV writing, freelancing, coding and entrepreneurship where youth were able to interact with the different organizations and learn new skills needed in today's world. They day was considered a start for a dialogue with youth about the importance of volunteerism and its linkage to the success of the Global Goals.

The day ended with a concert featuring the famous Star Academy Singer Mina Attiya who engaged positively with the audience and communicated his support to volunteerism and youth.

Background:

The International Volunteer Day (IVD) mandated by the UN General Assembly, is held each year on 5 December. It is viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organizations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), United Nations agencies, government authorities and the private sector.
