The UNDP Egypt Country Office is delighted that the National Human Development Report on Youth in Egypt (2010) was amongst the six outstanding human development reports that received an award for excellence in 2014. This recognition of excellence is testimony to the high quality of analysis, its consultative and participatory approach, engaging young Egyptians in its drafting, and very importantly, its forward looking and evidence based recommendations that are firmly rooted in Egypt’ national priorities and that stand the test of time.

The Report has succeeded in raising several issues and provided policy recommendations that are very relevant to today’s Egypt, including breaking the cycle of poverty, fighting corruption, youth education, employment and participation, and women’s empowerment As illustrated in this eleventh in the series of National Human Development Reports, a vision of a productive and socially inclusive society is one in which all young Egyptians would feel valued and have the opportunity to participate fully in the life of their society. It also called for the development of a progressive and inclusive National Youth Strategy for Egypt.

The upcoming NHDR will be on the current state of human development, social justice, social protection and equal opportunities. The report’s topic was chosen based on a consultative process which identified the areas of social justice, social protection, equity and equal opportunities as major priority for Egypt. The report will target policy makers during this critical juncture in Egyptian history when government is exerting effort to address problems of social equity, income distribution, subsidy reform, and provision of quality basic services.
