Workshop to develop ecotourism strategy for Wadi Rayan and Qaroun protected areas in Fayoum

A workshop was held on 29 July 2018 to discuss the eco-tourism strategy for Wadi Rayan and Qaroun protected areas in Fayoum governorate. Participants in the workshop included: non-governmental organizations (NGOs), private sector, local communities, representative from the Nature Conservation sector at the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The workshop was held as part of the activities under the Egyptian-Italian Environmental programme; a UNDP/EEAA project funded by the Italian government. The objective of the workshop was to develop an eco-tourism strategy for Fayoum and if proves successful to do the same for SIWA and Wadi El Gemmal.

Some of the eco-tourism activities that can attract tourists include Safari rides, Birdwatching, Kayaked on the lakes of Qaroun, Sandboarding, Camel riding, Mount hiking, Star gracing and Tricking.

The current situation of eco-tourism in Fayoum was discussed in detail. The participants identified the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. This analysis is the basis for the strategy development.
