Environment and Energy

UNDP, in partnership with five other UN agencies and the Government of Egypt, are exploring different options for managing climate-change-related-risks including Nile River flow and floods; adaptation of new stress tolerant crop species; and promotion of Integrated Coastal Zone Management to adapt Nile Delta lowlands against rising sea levels. UNDP is also studying the socio-economic impact of climate change in order to encourage appropriate policies and investments by the Government of Egypt. To address climate risk mitigation UNDP has provided expertise to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy in translating the decision of the Supreme Energy Council to make energy efficiency a strategic priority. So far, the introduction and promotion of energy efficiency initiatives have succeeded in reducing transmission cable losses from 7% to 3.5%.

UNDP assistance has also resulted in a draft national code for energy efficient buildings that was included in the recently approved Housing Law. Likewise, UNDP continues to support the transformation of public and private buildings to make them environmentally friendly, while also assisting the Government in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector, and identifying ways of converting agricultural and human waste into renewable sources of energy.View more

Environment and Energy: An Overview

Egypt formulated and endorsed the National Environmental Action Plan covering all aspects of sustainable development and established the national committee for sustainable development to operationalize the plan. The Government’s commitment was manifested in issuing the "Framework of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development and Methodology of Preparing the Indicators", and establishing units in a number of ministries, to initiate the development of such indicators.View more
