Environment and Energy
UNDP supports nature and wildlife conservation, promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency, climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk reduction, sustainable transport and solid waste management. This includes management of the Nile River flow and floods; adaptation of new stress tolerant crop species; and promotion of Integrated Coastal Zone Management to adapt Nile Delta lowlands against rising sea levels. We are also studying the socio-economic impact of climate change in order to encourage appropriate policies and investments by the Government of Egypt. With our support, Egypt has seen the establishment of ten natural protectorates across the country and succeeded in introducing income generation activities to improve livelihoods, and secure local community engagement in conservation.
For renewable energy & energy efficiency, the promotion of energy efficiency measures is one of our priorities, which helps reduce energy consumption and costs by up to 50%. Our assistance has resulted in a draft of the national code for energy efficient buildings that was included in the Housing Law. Likewise, we continue to support the transformation of public and private buildings to make them environmentally friendly, while also assisting the government in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector, and identifying ways of converting agricultural and human waste into renewable sources of energy.
