Crisis Prevention and Recovery

UNDP provided technical support to the Government of Egypt to create a National Structure for Disaster Risk Reduction and management at the implementation, coordination and policy levels. UNDP supported the development of a National Strategy for Disaster Management and a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and is currently supporting the mainstreaming of disaster risk reduction and crisis prevention into government development planning.

UNDP has supported the Government of Egypt in its efforts to remove mines and unexploded ordinances in the Northwest Coast of Egypt, and hence preparing the area for development planning and use. Finally, UNDP supported the Cairo Centre for Training on Conflict Prevention and Peace Keeping in Africa (CCCPA) in building its capacities and training 317 peacekeepers over the past four years. The centre’s experience is now being used to promote the concept and practice of conflict management and prevention at the sub-national level.View more

Crisis Prevention and Recovery: An Overview

Back in February 2001, the UNDP Executive Board reaffirmed that crisis prevention and disaster mitigation should be integral parts of sustainable human development strategies. UNDP helps countries prevent and recover from armed conflicts and natural disasters through advocacy, capacity building, conflict sensitive development, development of tools and methodologies, gender equality, knowledge networking, strategic planning and programming, and policy and standard setting.View more
