Social, Economic and Legal Empowerment of Egyptian Women

What is this project about?

The integrated programme is implemented through UNDP, UN Women and UNFPA, and will help to address the different multi-faceted challenges that are facing women and young girls in Egypt through supporting a number of initiatives targeting three pillars of women’s empowerment including social, legal and economic empowerment.  The integrated programme will be working at both the grass root and policy levels with full engagement of civil society, as the main agents of change, and the Government of Egypt.

What have we accomplished so far?

  • Gender Unit within SFD established. A gender strategy and gender training will follow as well as developing financial schemes, products and methods suitable for women.
  • National mapping study of NGO’s working on Egyptian Women’s issues in progress.
  • Electronic data base/ smart map being prepared.
  • Tools for women’s inclusive economic policy making and participation being developed.
  • Best practices on women’s economic participation being evaluated and will be documented visually.
  • IT system being developed for improved operational efficiency and transparency of family courts
  • Issuance of additional ID’s for women underway.

  • Enabling environment for abandonment of FGM/ C and combatting other forms of violence against women through strengthened community and legal mechanisms.
  • Coordinating women’s rights movements for better advocacy and advance status of Egyptian women through outreach, networking and peer education.
  • Gender responsive governance and policies through supporting SME’s and improving evidence-based programming.
  • Fair and efficient access to justice by women through operational efficiency and transparency in family courts and enhanced access to information.
  • Increased access of poor women to services through greater economic empowerment and access to citizenship rights (ID’s etc).
